Blog #5

What do you feel this course (UN100) should focus on? What do you need help in, specifically? Please write at least one paragraph focusing on your specific academic needs.

I think this class should focus primarily on the aid to sucess. This course i feel should support, teach, and better my learning abilities. When i heard we were reading FFN I was like well maybe she's teaching us responsiblity and lessons pertaining to assignments. Now, I'm not to sure, i just feel like its homework or busy work kind of taking time away from the freshman seminar book its self. I enjoy reading FFN don't get me wrong, i just wish we were focusing on or going in depth on anxiety, note taking, reading skills, time management, ect. Personally for me, I need to be taught others skills that could help me succeed. I feel confident in my study habits, note taking, and memorization/ learning skills. I feel that it all goes to waste when it comes to moments before a test, quiz or exam, i freak and forget it all. I feel like i walk in knowing it all and walk out knowing nothing. So i guess personally i would like to learn to relax or different skills to help me succeed.

Excellent - that is exactly what we are going to focus on now: study techniques, test anxiety, test-taking, procrastination etc.. which are definitely obstacles to success. Relaxation techniques is a good suggestion too - I never thought of that.

There is no busy work in college :) Well, at least I like to hope not. I know I sure never assign anything that doesn't have relevance. I realize I've gotten caught-up in FFN and need to focus back on success in college though.

Hey Heather.
I TOTALLY agree with your thoughts on FFN. I kept thinking I was just missing the connection between reading FFN and being a freshman in college. Every time we get a new assignment from FFN, I just get even more frustrated and stressed, because I see it as a waste of time. We are learning really cool stuff from it, but nothing that pertains to learning about good study habits, time management, what's on campus, etc.
By talking to you the other day in class, helped me learn a little bit about your problem with test anxiety, and I totally agree with what you wrote in your blog. I do think that is one of the things we should be learning about in UN 100, because I think a lot of us could use some tips.
Awesome Blog!
