blog #3

Ø Describe your ideal Instructor/Professor.
my ideal instructor is very organized, lays out what you have to do when you have to do it, and how they want it done. I'm really not all about the crazy out there teachers who say "hey make me a project on what you read..." leaving it at just that. I have to have a teacher say i want a poster, a speech, or a scrap book for example.

Ø “I knew it when I studied it, but I forgot it on the test.” How can students study differently to prevent this from happening?

there are several ways of remembering the studied material but the material must be in your long term memory to recall. To study, give yourself time, days not hours. you can't simply memorize, you'll forget because its only in your short term memory. What i do is use my notecards, i memorize the information on these cards ( definitions, placement, or background information on the topic), i then find something to relate it to. for example, The zygomatic bone, i say ( under the zz-eye) so when it came to taking the test i say zzz-eye is under the eye, so the zygomatic bone is under your eye. you must relate information to other knowlege to recall things. By relating information it stores your knowledge in your long-term memory not your short term memory.

Ø How do you study for quizzes/tests?
note cards, reading notes, reading the book, if its math i simply do more and more problems till i understand the concept.

Ø What do you have trouble with on quizzes/tests?
not freaking out, and sometimes recalling information becasue i am so anxious.

letter to Mcdonald's:

This letter makes the image of Mcdonalds all seem so clear now. Mcdonald's, the perfect fast food resturant, is clearly not all that its cracked up to be. When picturing a Mcdonalds at work, you think about a bossy, kind manager, who is keeping the employees on task, all dressed the same with a greased over polo, hat, hair up and a name tag to seperate them from one another. The so called kitchen should be clean, organized, supplies labled, and floors swept. Wait, stop! Apparently we were all wrong. The perfect fast food resturant we all thought Mcdonalds was is just an imagination. This resturant is what I like to call gross. The managers, if any are working, are usually underdress, hair down, no hat, on break, or extremely late. In the article "letter to mcdonald's" you find this to be all true and much more. It makes me sick thinking about how dirty, unsanitary, and uncaring people are. It seems to me Mcdonalds has all the dirty, rude, unthankful kids other employers didn't want. I'm not saying all people are uncareing and dirty, it just makes me think how someone could simply not clean up a grill because they wanted to go home 5 mins early to sit on the couch and watch the new episode to "the real world" while you eat a "freshly" cook hamburger on that so called clean grill.

Ok I'm really glad i don't eat at Mcdonalds at all. This is so gross the coffee, oh my goodness, thats crazy.

Ø Reiterate a term or concept you learned in Anatomy this week.

Epithelium- ( plural) is classified with different shapes such as squamous, cubodial, and columnar. These shapes of cells can also be layered differently such as simple or stratifed based on layers.

Ø List a few pleasant events that happened during your first weeks at NMU.
made a few new friends, i realized how its good to meet new people but at the same time it makes you realize how much you enjoy who your true, best friends are. I went to a football game which wasn't as good as i thought it'd be. got a good grade on my math quiz.

Ø Where do you want to be (academically) in six months?

i want a good gpa. I've always been a good student it just seems like college might change that. I recieved 4.0 both semesters in highschool actually 4.25 with my AP classes. I just hope i can keep up on my grades.

Ø List habits you already possess that make you successful in college.
note taking, OCD about studying, asks questions
Ø List habits (timewasters?) you can change or modify, or need to lose.
talk on the phone, check my facebook, work

Ø Explain how you approach studying your a) textbook and b) notes.
i read my book and take notes... then i take those notes and turn them into note cards and learn that information so im not dependant on having a sheet of paper in my hands to trigger my memory.

Ø Explain how you determine what to write down in notes during lectures.
i can't explain it, i just write down vocab i don't know or know to remember, make sure everything that seems important to me is writen down.

Ø FAST FOOD NATION:
Ø Watch this short 1980’s McDonald’s commercial. McD’s reps have actually claimed they do not target children in their ads.. Pay attention to the tagline: “The Hamburglar is very clever and very sneaky!” Why is this ironic?

because the company itself is sneaky. They do indeed target children through this cartoon. it's ironic because they are being hypicritical.

Ø Over the last several decades, fast food companies have aggressively targeted children in their marketing efforts. Should advertisers be permitted to target children who lack the sophistication to make informed decisions and are essentially being lured into eating high fat, high calorie food through toys and cute corporate mascots?

i think its a smart idea, don't get me wrong its completely wrong, i just think it was so smart in the advertising world. I do indeed think its wrong they target an age that knows so little about food, whats good for them, and what is right and wrong.

Ø List your own quote, favorite saying, song, or other expression of your feelings today.

"I should be out in that driveway stopping you Tears should be rolling down my cheek And I don't know why I'm not falling apart Like I usually do And how the thought of losing you's not killing me I feel bad That I can stand here strong Cold as stone, Seems so wrong I can't explain it Maybe it's just I've cried so much I'm tired and I'm numb Baby I hate it I feel bad that I don't feel bad..."
Rascal flatts
My reasoning on this is simple; recently this summer my mother decided to up and leave on me and my family. As hard as it is to go through life without a parent or in my situation a mother i find myself feeling bad about not truly feeling bad she left because of all of her choices she made.

Ø Now that you made it to NMU – why are you here?
I'm here to become well educated. I truly love working with people and found myself interested in Radiology, like most in my Seminar class.

Ø How did you choose this school?
It was either going away to school for Radiology, or staying here and just going through the school of Radiology. As much as i would have liked to go away, I don't think I would have been able to leave my hometown.

Ø List initial observations of your new environment.
A lot of people smoke, big variety of people, most talk really loud for others to hear their conversations, everyone is checking everyone else out.

Ø List initial observations of your classes.
The professors don't care.
That it is so different than highschool
That it appears easier than highschool but truly isn't.

Ø What observations have you made about other students?
You can tell which ones live in the dorms.
A lot of the freshman stick together to feel safe.

Ø About your instructors?
oh goodness, I honestly wanted to cry my first week. I really can't understand half my instructors. One is seems really mean, and the others really nice.

Ø What do you think will be your biggest challenge(s) academically this semester?
Class wise i think my anatomy class, also a challenge will be managing time.

Ø Finally, name one goal (personal, academic, etc..) you have for yourself next week.
Well, i have an anatomy exam on the 16th, so i truly want to get myself to study all this week for the exam.
